FAQ

ORCID stands for Open Researcher and Contributor ID. It is an international non-profit, open, interdisciplinary registry of unique identifiers for researchers. It is designed to unambiguously distinguish your research activities and outputs from those with similar names by providing each registered researcher with an individual identification number. Your ORCID iD and connections are stored in the ORCID Registry, in an account you own and manage.

An ORCID iD ensures your research outputs and activities are correctly attributed to you and assists with helping your work become more discoverable. It also connects you with all your contributions and affiliations, not just your journal articles and monographs (funding, data sets, software, patents, service achievements, etc.). Moreover, since a growing list of publishers are requiring an ORCID iD at the time of manuscript submission (including IEEE, Wiley, Cambridge University Press, American Chemical Society, Springer Nature, IOP, PLOS, and Sage), scholars can anticipate the increasing likelihood of being asked to provide an ORCID iD to ensure accurate capture of their name and institutional details. Finally, ORCID iDs also help with form-filling as granting agencies are increasingly allowing researchers to import profile information from ORCID into their grant applications.

Here are some step-by-step instructions on how to get started with your ORCID record.

One of ORCID’s core principles is that individuals control their ORCID iD and the information attached to it. ORCID systems are designed so that nothing can be added to an individual’s ORCID record without his/her explicit consent. The permissions structure within one’s ORCID account is also very granular, where a user can control every element in an ORCID profile. Any access to one’s ORCID account is met with a request to the user who can decide to approve or ignore. ORCID takes special care with data security, integrity and accountability, and is GDPR compliant. You can learn more about setting your visibility preferences in ORCID here and about ORCID’s privacy policy here.
